This Privacy Policy explains how Rylo ("we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and discloses information about you and your child when you use our mobile application (the "App").

We built Rylo to be a safe, magical space for children. We do not sell your data. Our business model is based on subscriptions, not surveillance.

1. Information We Collect

To provide the Rylo storytelling experience, we process the following types of data:

A. Audio Recordings

  • What: We record your (or your child's) voice when you tap the "Talk" button.
  • Why: This audio is recorded solely to transcribe the story idea or question into text.
  • Storage: The audio is sent securely to our transcription provider (OpenAI) for processing. It is not permanently stored on our servers.

B. Text Data

  • What: The transcribed text of your story requests.
  • Why: This text is sent to our AI partners (Anthropic and OpenAI) to generate the story content and the narration voice.

C. Usage Data

  • What: Non-personal data such as app crashes, performance metrics, and subscription status.
  • Why: To fix bugs and ensure the app runs smoothly.

2. How We Use AI (Third-Party Services)

Rylo works by connecting to industry-leading Artificial Intelligence services. We share specific data with them only to generate your content:

  • OpenAI: Used for Speech-to-Text (Whisper) and Text-to-Speech (Voices). OpenAI Privacy Policy

3. Children’s Privacy

Protecting children is our top priority.

  • We do not knowingly collect personal identifiable information (PII) like names, addresses, or phone numbers from children.
  • We do not use data for advertising purposes.
  • We do not build profiles on children for marketing.

The App is designed to be used by parents with their children, or by children under parental supervision.

4. Data Retention and Security

  • Local Storage: Generated stories and audio files are stored locally on your device so you can replay them. You can delete the app to remove this data at any time.
  • Security: We use industry-standard encryption (HTTPS) when transmitting data to our AI providers.

5. Your Rights (POPIA & GDPR)

Depending on your location (including South Africa and the EU), you have rights regarding your data:

  • Right to Access: You may ask what data we hold about you.
  • Right to Delete: You may delete the app to remove local data, or contact us to request the deletion of any account-related data.

6. Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you through the App or the App Store listing.
