1. Introduction

Welcome to KhataMitra! KhataMitra is a mobile application designed to help you manage your income, expenses, and budget effectively. Your privacy is important to us, and we are committed to protecting your personal information. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, safeguard, and retain your information when you use our app.
 

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Financial Information

  • What we collect: Income, expense, and budget data that you manually enter into the app.
  • How we store it: All financial data is stored locally on your device using Room database. We do NOT transmit, upload, or store this data on our servers or any cloud services.
  • Access: Only you have access to this data on your device.

2.2 SMS Information

  • What we collect: With your explicit permission, KhataMitra accesses your SMS messages to read only transactional messages from banks and financial institutions (such as payment confirmations, bank alerts, and transaction notifications).
  • How we use it: We filter and display transaction-related SMS to help you quickly add income/expense entries to your records.
  • What we store: We store only the message IDs of processed SMS messages locally on your device to prevent showing the same message multiple times. We do NOT store the content of SMS messages.
  • What we don't access: We do not read, access, or store personal messages, OTPs, or any non-financial SMS content.

2.3 Phone Number

  • What we collect: Your device's phone number may be accessed as part of the SMS permission.
  • How we use it: This information is used solely for the SMS filtering functionality and is NOT transmitted, stored, or shared with any third parties.

2.4 Information We Do NOT Collect

  • We do not collect your name, email address, or contact information unless you voluntarily provide it to contact us.
  • We do not track your location.
  • We do not collect device identifiers for advertising purposes.
  • We do not share any data with third parties.
     

3. How We Use Your Information

We use your information solely for the following purposes:

  • App Functionality: To provide core features including income, expense, and budget tracking.
  • Automatic Expense Tracking: To filter and display transaction-related SMS messages, making it easier for you to record expenses and income.
  • Preventing Duplicates: To store message IDs locally to avoid showing already-processed SMS messages.

3.1 Smart Reminder Logic

  • To avoid redundant notifications, KhataMitra performs a local check of your transaction records before showing a reminder.
  • Privacy Guarantee: This check happens entirely on your device. The app looks at your local database to see if an entry was made today; no data is ever uploaded or shared during this process.

We do NOT:

  • Sell, rent, or share your data with third parties
  • Use your data for advertising or marketing
  • Transmit your data to our servers or any external servers
     

4. Data Storage and Retention

4.1 Local Storage

All your data (financial records, message IDs) is stored locally on your device using Room database. We have no access to this data.

4.2 Data Retention Period

  • Financial Data: Your income, expense, and budget data remains on your device until you manually delete it through the app or uninstall the application.
  • SMS Message IDs: Stored locally on your device for the lifetime of the app installation to prevent duplicate processing. These IDs are deleted when you uninstall the app.
  • No Server-Side Retention: Since we do not collect or transmit data to our servers, there is no server-side data retention.

4.3 Data Deletion

You can delete your data at any time by:

  • Deleting individual entries within the app
  • Clearing all data through the app's settings
  • Uninstalling the application (this removes all locally stored data)

4.4 Notification Preferences

  • Your chosen reminder time and notification toggle status are stored locally on your device using SharedPreferences. We do not have access to these settings.

5. Data Security

We take the security of your data seriously:

  • Local Storage: All data is stored locally on your device using Room database with encryption capabilities.
  • No Transmission: Your financial data and SMS content are never transmitted over the internet.
  • Device Security: Your data security depends on your device's security measures. We recommend using device passwords, biometric locks, and keeping your device updated.
  • Permissions: We request only the minimum permissions necessary for app functionality (SMS reading).
     

6. Permissions Explained

6.1 READ_SMS Permission

  • Why we need it: To read transactional SMS messages from banks and financial institutions.
  • What we do with it: Filter and display only transaction-related messages to help you record expenses/income.
  • What we store: Only message IDs (not message content) to prevent duplicate displays.
  • Optional: This permission is optional. You can use KhataMitra without granting SMS permission by manually entering all transaction

6.2 RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED Permission

  • Why we need it: To automatically reschedule your expense reminders if you restart your phone.
  • What we do with it: It simply triggers a small piece of code at startup to ensure your "9:00 PM" (or other chosen time) reminder is still active.

6.3 SCHEDULE_EXACT_ALARM Permission

  • Why we need it: To ensure your reminders trigger exactly at the time you set.
  • What we do with it: This allows the app to wake up precisely at your scheduled time to check if you need a reminder.
     

7. Third-Party Services

KhataMitra currently does NOT integrate with any third-party services, analytics tools, or advertising networks. All data processing happens locally on your device.

If we integrate third-party services in the future, we will:

  • Update this Privacy Policy
  • Notify you through the app
  • Request your consent where required
     

8. Children's Privacy

KhataMitra is not intended for use by children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have collected information from a child under 13, please contact us immediately.
 

9. Your Rights and Choices

You have the following rights regarding your data:

  • Access: You can access all your data within the app at any time.
  • Deletion: You can delete your data at any time through the app or by uninstalling it.
  • Permission Control: You can revoke SMS permission at any time through your device settings. The app will continue to function, but you'll need to manually enter transactions.
  • Export: You can export your financial data through the app's export functionality (if available).
     

10. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect:

  • Changes in our data practices
  • New features or functionality
  • Legal or regulatory requirements

When we make changes:

  • We will update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this policy
  • We will notify you through the app or via email (if provided)
  • Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy
