ink & ember is a quiet space for writing. this policy explains, plainly, what happens to anything you type.
who runs ink & ember
ink & ember is operated by technology & tea, based in south africa. technology & tea is the operator responsible for any personal data processed through the app.
what we collect
ink & ember is designed to collect as little as possible. when you use one of the three writing entry points — the feels, encounter, or abstract — the text you type on those prompt screens is sent to our server so we can generate poetic prompts and an opening draft for you. when you save a poem, the poem text is also sent to our server to be checked for content that is harmful or not permitted under our guidelines before it is stored on your device. we don't collect your name, email, contacts, location, photos, or any device identifiers. there are no analytics, no advertising, no tracking.
your poems stay on your device
the poems you write and save are stored locally in the app's private storage on your device. they are never uploaded, never synced, and never visible to us or anyone else. if you uninstall the app, your saved poems are removed with it.
third parties
text from the prompt screens is sent to our server and then to openai so a poetic response can be generated and returned to you. when you save a poem, the poem text is also sent to openai for content moderation — this runs automatically before the poem is stored on your device. openai processes this text only to return the result and, under their api terms, does not use it to train their models.
retention
our server does not store the text you submit after the response is returned. requests are processed in memory and discarded. operational logs do not include the content of your submissions.
children
ink & ember is intended for users aged 13 and over. we do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.
your choices
you can stop sending any data at any time by not using the three entry-point flows; you can still write freely in the editor. uninstalling the app removes all saved poems from your device.
your rights
depending on where you live, you may have rights under laws such as the gdpr (eu/uk), the popia (south africa), or the ccpa (california) — including the right to access, correct, or delete personal data we hold about you, and to complain to your local data protection authority. because we don't keep an account for you and don't retain prompt text after a response is returned, there is usually nothing for us to retrieve or delete on request. you can still reach us at the contact address below and we'll respond within a reasonable time.
changes
if this policy changes, the updated date at the top of this page will change. material changes will be surfaced in-app on next launch.
